High School Musical
Musical theatre in summer 2008
London Light's highest profile production to date, High School Musical pulled in some 70,000 people across 115 performances across seven venues in summer 2008. Presented by Songtime Theatre Arts, it was one of only a very small number of licensed versions allowed before everything was brought back under the copyright holder's complete control. The brief for the lighting from producer Matthew Chandler was simply 'hi-tech' to reflect the 'hi-tech' content of the show, in which mobile phones and laptops play an integral part.
Custom-built strips of X-Chip-100 LEDs - approx 90m in total comprising of 6,000 LEDs - were constructed and attached to the edges of the composite set. These help to delineate spaces within the otherwise static set and are also used to provide colour and dynamic effects during the musical numbers and scene transitions.
While the bulk of the visual effects were provided by the LEDs, a combination of six VL1000 arcs and PAR cans provided saturated colour front light, PAR cans with Rainbow scrollers providing back light and ten VL2000 spots provide gobos and moving light on stage.
A dozen high-output GLP LED luminaires are used for washing the walls of the set in saturated colour;
50 ETC Source Fours, 34 Par 64s, two Look Solutions Unique Hazers and two Robert Juliat Manon 1200W follow spots complete the set up, all controlled by London Light Production Services' ETC Eos control desk.
London Light also provided sound equipment, including an Allen & Heath 24-channel GL2400 mixing desk, with the 40-strong ensemble equipped with 16 Sennheiser EW100 G2 body packs with
MKW2 mic heads.
