Smoky Joe's Café
Musical theatre, January 2009
This musical theatre production of Smoky Joe's Café was produced by Songtime Theatre Arts. David Buffham comments: "We used a variety of different luminaires to create a range of different looks from the same rig. The 50s and 60s music didn't lend itself to a contemporary look, so we tried to get as many static looks as we could using VL5s and PARcans with scrollers.
"Commissioned by the Epson Playhouse, the show is a collection of around 40 songs by the students, who range from late teens to early 20s. The key was to make sure that each number looked quite different from the previous."
Programmed using an ETC Eos control desk from London Light's rental stock, the show used a combination of Vari-Lite VL5 Arcs, VL2K spots and washes and generic PAR cans.
"The brief was to create 1950s style musical based around the music of the rock and roll period, explains Songtime Theatre Arts producer Matthew Chandler. "They went away to do their research without any further input from me, and I was very pleased with the outcome. London Light have always raised the professional standards of Songtime productions, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them."
